PETALING JAYA: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan today confirmed that he would defend the Rantau state seat which he won in the 14th general election last year.
“Of course I will contest in Rantau,” he told FMT, adding that Barisan Nasional (BN) would not have any issues with his decision as Rantau was an Umno seat.
“They will respect whoever possesses the seat. It was different in Cameron Highlands because we were tactful, as MIC had only lent us the seat.”
Mohamad lost the Rantau seat after failing to set aside the Election Court judgment that his victory was null and void.
He initially won the seat uncontested after his opponent from Pakatan Harapan, Dr S Streram, was barred from entering the nomination centre as he did not have a pass issued by the Election Commission (EC).
EC chairman Azhar Harun announced on Feb 26 that the Rantau by-election would be held within the next two months.
