GEORGE TOWN: A fisherman was today charged with murdering Surinder Kaur Bedi Kirpal Singh by a roadside in Bayan Lepas last Saturday.

Ali Ahmad, 55, was charged with murdering Surinder between 10pm and 11.45pm by the roadside of Persiaran Bayan Indah, near Bayan Lepas.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the mandatory death penalty.

Ali, who appeared in a denim shirt and pants, did not respond when the charge was read out by magistrate Umma Devi Loganathan.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Syafiq Nasrullah told the court that Surinder’s post-mortem report is ready although the chemistry and DNA reports are still pending.

Umma set May 9 for hearing the results of the chemistry and DNA reports and asked Ali, who appeared frail, if he had any health problems. He replied that he is a diabetic.

Earlier, Ali’s case was wrongly brought up at the Sessions Court where he was given a dismissal not amounting to an acquittal.

He was later re-registered by the police at the Magistrate’s Court.

Surinder died on April 1, reportedly from severe brain injuries resulting from blunt force trauma. Ali, who was identified as a fisherman by the police, admitted to assaulting her over an argument while inebriated.

He has seven prior criminal records, all related to drug abuse.
