EC denies taking sides in Rantau

Election Commission chairman Azhar Harun speaks to reporters outside SJK (C) Sri Sendayan in Seremban.

SEREMBAN: The Election Commission (EC) today fended off accusations that it is biased in taking action against those who commit offences in the campaign for the Rantau by-election.

EC chairman Azhar Harun said the commission had taken action 16 times since campaigning for the state seat began on March 30.

“Eight of these were against Pakatan Harapan (PH) and eight against Barisan Nasional (BN).

“So we have been fair. We are not taking sides,” he told reporters after visiting SJK (C) Sri Sendayan here this morning

Azhar said the offences include campaigning without a permit, and putting up banners and buntings despite not contesting in the polls.

Yesterday, BN candidate Mohamad Hasan hinted that the electoral body was taking sides, claiming that the EC would take immediate action over offences linked to the coalition.

The former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar also urged the EC to put a stop to programmes organised by PH which he said contravened election laws.
