PH attracts big crowds in final stretch of Rantau polls campaign

SEREMBAN: As the Rantau by-election campaign comes to an end, Pakatan Harapan (PH), the underdog in the race, tonight was finally able to draw out large crowds to rival that of Barisan Nasional ceramahs held over the last two weeks.

For the most part, the crowds at late-night PH ceramah events had rarely passed the 500-strong mark — even with PH top guns and leaders of the four component parties attending. On the other hand, the number often surpassed 1,000 or 2,000 at BN ceramahs.

However, tonight, on the eve of the by-election, PH was able to attract a crowd of 1,000 at a mostly-Chinese dinner in Bandar Ekar Rantau.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim showed up to speak to voters and canvass votes on behalf of the PH candidate, Dr Streram Sinnasamy.

Those attending were served steamboat dishes consisting of fried rice, chicken, fish and soup.

There were at least 90 tables at this event, with one allocated for Anwar and other PH leaders.

At PH’s grand finale ceramah in Bandar Seri Sendayan, a crowd of at least 1,000 gathered to listen to PH leaders speak. Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad could not make it for the event.

Anwar, when attending the Bandar Ekar Rantau event, continued his attacks on former prime minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor.

He said those who stole must face the music, quipping that his old jail cell at the Sungai Buloh prison was still empty.

“If you steal, you must go to jail,” he said, referring to alleged misdeeds that Najib has been charged with.

He also promised that things will take a turn for the better for Rantau now that he is Port Dickson MP, which is next to Rantau. He said investors will come to Port Dickson and this will have a spillover effect on all areas nearby, like Rantau.

He said when he becomes prime minister, he will not forget Rantau. This promise received loud applause.

Tomorrow is voting day for Rantau voters. BN’s Mohamad Hasan is up against Streram and independents Malar Rajaram and Mohd Nor Yassin.
