PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 is calling on the public to lodge reports with the Election Commission if political parties and candidates for tomorrow’s Rantau by-election continue their campaign after midnight.
The move by the election watchdog follows allegations that both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional canvassed for votes through their booths during polling day for the Semenyih by-election on March 2.
It is an election offence to campaign and canvass for votes on polling day, including on social media as well as through booths set up by candidates outside polling stations.
The campaigning period officially ends at 11.59pm tonight.
“We urge all quarters to respect the cooling-off period that starts from midnight of polling day in order to create a free voting environment for voters,” Bersih said in a statement.
Former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar and Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan is facing PH’s Dr S Streram Sinnasamy and independents Mohd Nor Yassin and Malar Rajaram.
Mohamad won the seat by default after Streram was barred from contesting in the May polls last year, a decision which was challenged in court resulting in the by-election.
