PETALING JAYA: Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 has accused Mohamad Hasan of breaking election laws by flashing his ballot paper when casting his vote at the Rantau by-election earlier today.
In a statement by its steering committee, Bersih said: “Does he not know that it is an election offence to breach the secrecy of a vote, even one’s own vote, or did he do it in defiance of the law?”
A photograph of Mohamad and his ballot paper has been circulating on social media. However, it was not clear if any marking could be made out by viewers.
Bersih said that Mohamad’s action could have influenced how others voted and might encourage others in future to flagrantly expose their votes. The organisation urged the police and the Election Commission to take action.
Mohamad is seeking re-election for a fourth term as assemblyman for Rantau. His challengers are Pakatan Harapan’s Dr Streram Sinnasamy (PKR) and independents Malar Rajaram and Mohd Nor Yassin.
