RANTAU: First blood in the Rantau by-election has gone to acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan, according to unofficial results from Kampung Bemban, Seremban.

Mohamad (BN) had secured 8,442 votes to 4,642 for Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr Streram Sinnasamy (PKR), for a majority of 3,800, the Election Commission reported.

The two independent candidates were neck-and-neck, but far behind the leading contenders. Malar Rajaram had 67 votes and Mohd Nor Yassin 66.

Polling had proceeded smoothly today and a turnout of about 74% was recorded at 4pm.

Rantau, a Malay-majority constituency, has 20,926 voters. It is one of 36 seats in the Negeri Sembilan state assembly, where Pakatan Harapan holds 20 seats to BN’s 15.
