PETALING JAYA: Selangor’s new Umno chief will be appointed after the Aidilfitri celebrations, the party’s acting deputy president Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.
Ismail said until then, the state’s current Umno deputy chief Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan will take on the responsibility.
“In the meantime, I will be meeting with the division chiefs and the leaders of the respective wings to get their views,” he told FMT, adding that several division chiefs have expressed interest in the post.
Ismail also said that he will discuss the matter with the party’s acting president Mohamad Hasan to decide who should lead Selangor Umno in place of Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar who stepped down following the Barisan Nasional’s failure at the 2018 general election.
Ismail was later appointed as temporary Selangor Umno chief. He resigned on May 1.
He said the performance of the state chapter had improved in the year since he took charge.
“Our biggest success is wresting the Semenyih state seat from Pakatan Harapan in the by-election on March 2, which is why I feel Selangor Umno can be led by leaders from the state who have the ability to ensure the party can continue to make inroads.”
