Negligent Pan Borneo highway contractors in Sabah face the sack
They have broken water pipes, disrupting supply to residents nearby.
KOTA KINABALU: The government will not hesitate to take stern action, including immediate termination, of negligent Pan Borneo Highway contractors, a state minister warned today.
Sabah Industrial Development Minister Peter Anthony said some contractors had damaged government utilities, particularly pipes belonging to the state Water Department, causing a severe disruption in water supply.
“I have received complaints from people in Sipitang, Beaufort and Membakut who faced such sudden water disruption.
“This disruption was due to the negligence of several contractors involved in the highway construction.
“Other government agencies, such as the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), also had their services disrupted by such road works,” he said.
Speaking to reporters after handing out breaking-of-fast meals to passengers at the Sembulan train station here, Anthony said warning letters had been issued to the contractors concerned.
He said they will be dismissed at once if found negligent in future.
“The contractors must be more careful. They have to talk to the related agencies and get their advice on where the pipes or wires have been laid underground before doing any digging.”
He said the contractors will have to bear the cost of repairs.
“We know it is the fasting month now and Hari Raya Aidilfitri will be celebrated in a week’s time.
