Raya cheer for Pakistani prisoners in Malaysia after PM Khan’s intervention

Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced RM1.3 million financial aid to help 315 Pakistani citizens stranded in Malaysia.

PETALING JAYA: A total of 315 Pakistani prisoners completing their jail terms in Malaysia will be able to go home in time for Hari Raya, after earlier fearing they would be stranded in the country.

This followed intervention from Prime Minister Imran Khan, who announced Rs50 million (RM1.3 million) in financial assistance from the Foreign Office and the country’s zakat fund to help cover the cost of flying the detainees home.

Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the prisoners would arrive home on Wednesday night on a specially chartered flight and would be given a warm welcome by the government.

A spokesman for Islamabad was quoted as saying that the detainees, who were convicted of various immigration offences, were facing financial problems.
