PETALING JAYA: Higher housing allowances should be paid to members of the police force, and improvements made to their quarters, Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang said today.
He said housing in Johor Bahru cost about three times higher than the police housing allowance, and there was a lack of adequate housing for the police in the area.
Existing quarters were dilapidated and in urgent need of repairs, which could cost tens of millions of ringgit, he said after a visit to the Johor Bahru Utara police district.
He called for housing allowances to be increased for those serving in Johor Bahru and other major cities, repairs to be made to existing police quarters, and new police quarters to be built throughout the country.
Lim said an increase in housing allowance was among 11 recommendations made 14 years ago by a royal commission of inquiry which called for the setting up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission.
