3 in family killed in 2-car collision near Mersing

JOHOR BAHRU: Three in a family died in an accident involving a Proton Wira and a Proton Exora at Km 15, Jalan Mersing-Endau, Mersing, today.

In the 11.30am incident, the victims, Mohd Safar Zakaria, 34, and his wife, Nurul Jannah Talib, 29, died at the scene while their four-year-old son, Muhammad Darwisy, died during treatment at Hospital Mersing.

Another two children of the dead couple, who were seriously injured, are being treated at the hospital together with six passengers from the Proton Exora.

Mersing police chief Cyril Edward Nuing said it was believed the Proton Wira driven by Safar from Endau to Mersing lost control and skidded into the opposite lane to collide with the Proton Exora.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Cyril advised the people to get sufficient rest before driving long distance to avoid getting into an accidents.

Police said 20 people lost their lives on the roads on the first day of Aidilfitri yesterday.

Since the Op Selamat 15 road safety operation, in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive season was launched on May 29, 140 people have been killed on the road.

During this eight-day period, 13,316 accidents involving 18,854 vehicles were reported.

Ops Selamat, which ends on June 12, focuses on six major offences, namely driving on the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, using handphones (not in “hands-free” mode), queue jumping, speeding and beating traffic lights.
