Death toll rises to 189 on 11th day of Ops Selamat

KUALA LUMPUR: There were 13 more deaths on the roads yesterday – the 11th day of Ops Selamat 15 held in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive season – bringing the total to 189.

The number of accidents also increased to 18,053 from 16,470 the day before, Royal Malaysia Police corporate communications head Asmawati Ahmad said.

Selangor recorded the highest number of fatalities with another five deaths, followed by Johor with three, and Penang, Malacca, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak with one each.

The highest number of accidents also took place in Selangor with 4,715 followed by Johor (2,781), Kuala Lumpur (2,140) and Perak (1,517).

Police conducted 3,226 operations and issued 241,144 summonses for various offences/

Asmawati said there were 60 more burglary cases involving houses and premises, bringing the total during the 11 days to 501.

Selangor recorded 121 cases followed by Sabah (51), Perak (45) and Sarawak (44).

Ops Selamat, which ends on Wednesday, focuses on six major offences – driving on the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, using hand phones while driving, queue jumping, speeding and beating traffic lights.
