Tawau hawker found dead after going for a drive

The hawker was found with stab wounds to his neck and chest.

KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested four teenage illegal immigrants in connection with the murder of a hawker in Sabah’s east coast Tawau district.

Tawau police chief Peter Umbuas said police picked up the four Filipinos, aged 16 and 17, at separate locations in the district today.

He said an initial investigation found that the suspects were upset after being accused by the victim of being snatch thieves. .

Jaafar Jalman, 49, had gone for a drive on Sunday and was found dead with stab wounds to his neck and chest yesterday.

His body was found face down in a drain behind a store at Fajar town by a passer-by at about 6pm.

Umbuas said Jaafar’s wife told police he had closed his stall at Kampung Titingan at about 12.30am on Sunday and had gone for a drive alone in his car.

“He told his wife he just wanted to go out for a drive. He did not have a mobile phone, and his car has yet to be found,” he said.

He said no personal documents were found on the body.

Police recovered a screwdriver and a knife at the scene.

“We are still investigating the motive behind the murder,” Umbuas said.
