Microbiologist named to head Melaka university

PUTRAJAYA: A microbiologist who is an official in the Higher Education Ministry has been appointed as vice-chancellor of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia in Melaka.

Prof Dr Raha Abdul Rahim’s appointment is for a three-year term beginning tomorrow.

Raha is currently a divisional director in the Higher Education Department of the ministry. She succeeds Prof Dr Shahrin Sahibuddin, who has held the position since June 16, 2014.

The Higher Education Department said her appointment was based on her expertise, knowledge, experience, and achievement as director of the Excellence Planning Division and previous posts.

She has also served as Research Management Centre director and deputy dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, both at Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Raha is also a member of the American Society for Microbiology and chief secretary of Asian Federation of Societies for Lactic Acid Bacteria. She published more than 130 papers in academic journals.
