GEORGE TOWN: A ferry passenger is feared drowned after falling into the sea while travelling from Butterworth to George Town this evening.

Seberang Perai Utara police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said a person on the upper deck of the Penang-bound ferry was believed to have fallen at about 6.15 pm.

“A male passenger had seen the victim fall but the gender and identity of the passenger could not be determined,” he said. The ferry was 10 minutes away from Butterworth at the time.

He said a check on the lower deck of the ferry revealed that a Honda City car had been left behind without a driver or passenger. The vehicle was registered in the name of a woman, Lye Ah Yin, 73, whose address was in Permatang Pauh.

Marine police, Fire and Rescue Services and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency had conducted a search of the sea until 8pm before it was called off due to the dark weather. The search would continue tomorrow.
