Top Tencent exec among 3 named to Khazanah board

PETALING JAYA: Khazanah Nasional Berhad has appointed three new board members, including a top executive of Chinese e-commerce giant Tencent Holding Company.

In a statement, Khazanah said the appointments of Azian Mohd Aziz, Prof Xiao’ou Tang and Lau Seng Yee took effect from June 26.

Azian is head of the advisory division at the Attorney-General’s Chambers and has held various positions in the government.

Among others, she was a legal adviser to the transport and defence ministries.

Xiao’ou, a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is also the founder of SenseTime, a leading artificial intelligence company focusing on computer vision and deep learning.

He also serves as the associate director of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Science.

Lau is the senior executive vice-president of Tencent, where he is also the chairman for group marketing and global branding.

A member of Tencent since 2006, Lau has played a role in building the company to become one of the top five technology public listed firms in the world with a market capitalisation of over US$430 billion.

In 2015, Lau was awarded the “Global Media Person of the Year” award by Cannes Lions, joining the list of illustrious recipients which includes Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and former Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer.
