PUTRAJAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad had only sarcasm – and a Beatles reference – when he responded this evening to Najib Razak’s claim that DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang was behind the setting up of PPBM as a way to divide the Malay electorate.
“Whoever said that, I think, needs to go to Tanjung Rambutan and have his brain checked,” Mahathir told reporters after chairing a meeting of the PPBM supreme council.
“Yeah la, Lim Kit Siang had a meeting with all the Malay leaders… to form Bersatu (PPBM) so we also said yeah, yeah, yeah,” Mahathir said in his characteristic sarcastic tone.
“They (whoever claimed this) think Malays cannot think,” he said, leaving reporters highly tickled.
Najib, the former Umno president, has said that he had met a person who was present at a meeting during which Lim supposedly pitched the idea.
According to Utusan Malaysia, Najib said Lim had mooted the formation of a new Malay party to Mahathir, which eventually led to the creation of PPBM.
Lim has responded by describing Najib as “an unscrupulous, unprincipled, Machiavellian and incorrigible liar”, adding that Najib would not be able to provide evidence to back his assertions.
