KUALA LUMPUR: The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for bauxite mining and export in Pahang will be finalised soon, said Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar.

He said the ministry and the Pahang government will decide on the date to implement the SOP.

“The SOP will then be uploaded on the ministry’s website for reference by all parties concerned,” he said in a statement here today.

Xavier was referring to a report by The Malaysian Insight on Thursday stating that the delay in implementing the SOP was frustrating bauxite mining operators in Pahang.

He said the SOP, which had taken into account the views of all the stakeholders, imposed strict conditions covering the entire chain of mining activities.

It is to ensure environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and the well-being of the people, he said.

The preparation of the document went through a number of processes, including a public hearing on April 14, he said.
