Ex-madrasah teacher held after student alleges molest

Penampang police chief Mohd Haris Ibrahim.

KOTA KINABALU: Police have detained a former madrasah (Islamic religious school) teacher for allegedly molesting a male student at a madrasah at Putatan, near here, on Sunday.

Penampang police chief Mohd Haris Ibrahim said the suspect, in his 20s, was arrested on Tuesday after the Form Four student lodged a report early in the morning.

He said the student claimed the suspect fondled his genitals when he was sleeping at about 1.30am on Sunday.

“The student said he was sleeping in the dormitory when the suspect came and touched his private parts,” Haris said.

He said the boy woke and ran away and only lodged a report at about 1.50am on Tuesday as he was ashamed and afraid.

Haris said the suspect has been remanded for investigations under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
