PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Maszlee Malik says all states have agreed to focus more on Maths and Science in primary schools following the decline in the number of students opting for Science stream.
“It’s declining because students did not master their Maths in primary schools and it is very obvious from the students’ performance in Maths in UPSR,” said Maszlee at a press conference.
He said the government will come up with more Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related programmes to overcome the shortage of students opting for Science stream.
He also encouraged the state governments to conduct additional extra classes on Maths and Science in primary schools.
“We want to make sure that Maths and Science will be given priority in schools,” he said.
Maszlee said he will make sure certain allocations are given for having these extra classes.
