PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has urged Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to “use his brains a bit” when claiming that cash-strapped Umno had raised more than RM2 billion through share sales.
Najib, who is former prime minister and former Umno president, pointed out that Umno’s accounts had already been frozen by the current government.
“If this minister uses his brain a little, he will know that Umno’s bank accounts have already been frozen by the government as a result of political oppression (‘penindasan politik’),” Najib said in a posting today.
Umno’s bank accounts were frozen under anti-money laundering laws last year.
“If he puts more thought into it, he will understand that the RM2 billion is a big figure and the PH government will be able to detect it if these funds are truly Umno’s,” he added.
He noted that Syed Saddiq had based his claim on a report in The Edge, which claimed Umno gained from the sale of shares in four public-listed companies.
However, Najib said the Edge report was inaccurate and had been denied by Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.
Last week The Edge listed the four companies as MyEG Services Bhd, Media Prima Bhd, KUB Malaysia Bhd and Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd. The latest sale on July 25 raised RM1.697 billion from the sale of MyEG shares at RM1.65 each, the daily reported.
However, MyEG has denied that Umno or proxies were a substantial shareholder in the company.
In today’s posting Najib also mocked Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu about a purported sale of two cows by Bagan Datuk PPBM division leaders in conjunction with Aidiladha celebrations.
Bagan Datuk PPBM committee member Bahaman Tokiran reportedly claimed that the cows were sold to buy a laptop computer and a printer, with only one cow distributed to the local community for last year’s Hari Raya Haji.
Najib questioned whether it was now halal for the PH government to channel funds directly for party politics. “Did the Perak MB buy the cows using his own money or was it from the Perak government?” he said.
Najib also took another stab at Syed Saddiq, who is PPBM Youth leader, asking if Syed Saddiq had an answer for that.
