KUALA LUMPUR: PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution today urged Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim to focus on his work, in the wake of the latter’s statement calling on Dr Mahathir Mohamad to resign over what he described as the prime minister’s inability to handle issues facing the country.
He said he had contacted Hassan and asked him to leave the matter to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership.
“I have asked him to focus on issues affecting the people,” he told reporters at an event here, adding that the matter would be handled “according to the previous agreement”.
Under PH consensus, Mahathir is supposed to hand over power to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim. However, no time frame has been set for the transfer of power.
Hassan, in making the call, said he had been among the MPs from PH who signed a petition urging the Agong to swear in Mahathir as prime minister following the general election last year.
However, he said it was now time for the veteran politician to resign, in what could signal deepening problems with the ruling coalition in the wake of differences among Cabinet members over controversies surrounding race and religion.
Mahathir has repeatedly said that he will honour his promise to make way for Anwar, while Anwar, the Port Dickson MP, has maintained that he is in no rush to become prime minister.
