KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah PPBM leader has urged PKR leaders to stop calling for Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s early resignation as the prime minister.
Jerry Ambuting, spokesman for PPBM vice-president Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman, said the persistent calls by PKR leaders, especially the party’s MPs, are beginning to sound as if they were being directed by the party’s leadership.
“Mahathir has repeated many times that he will keep his promise and hand over the PM’s post to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
“By right, PKR leaders should be more rational and responsible, not just issuing statements asking the prime minister to resign early,” he said today.
Jerry said the PKR leaders’ actions and words gave the impression that they were desperate for the prime minister’s post to be given to their party.
The latest in the long list of PKR leaders calling for Mahathir’s resignation was PKR member and Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim, who yesterday said Mahathir should go in order to save the Pakatan Harapan coalition.
In reply, PPBM Supreme Council member Tariq Ismail urged Hassan to be patient as such a statement is premature at this time.
Tariq said Mahathir is needed to keep a steady hand on the wheel as the country is undergoing an economic turmoil now.
He also said Anwar would have preferred to inherit a clean government with a strong economy so that he can pay more attention on governing the country rather than playing politics.
Ambuting insisted that Mahathir is facing challenging tasks at hand and it is crucial for him to get the backing from the people but, most importantly, from coalition parties in PH.
