Perak exco claims trial to rape charge

IPOH: Perak executive councillor Paul Yong was charged in the Sessions Court here today with raping a 23-year-old woman.

The housing, local government, public transport, non-Muslim affairs and new villages exco claimed trial to committing the offence at his home in Meru Desa Park between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on July 7.

The charge under Section 376 of the Penal Code carries up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

Yong, who is also Tronoh assemblyman, arrived at the courthouse at 8.57am in a BMW car. He was greeted by a group of supporters who had gathered at the courthouse entrance since 8.30am.

He was represented by Farhan Sapian, Malim Nawar assemblyman Leong Cheok Keng, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh and Jelutong MP RSN Rayer.

The prosecution meanwhile was represented by deputy public prosecutor Azhar Mokhtar, Ainul Wardah Shahidan and Naidatul Athirah Azman.

Judge Norashima Khalid set bail at RM15,000 with one surety, and Sept 24 for case management.

Earlier, Azhar who is also the director of Perak’s state Attorney-General’s Chambers asked the court not to grant bail on grounds that the accused might harass the key witness.

However, Ramkarpal urged the court to allow bail, arguing that the witness, an Indonesian woman, is being sheltered in a safe place.

He added that Yong has to support four children attending school and university, and has been cooperative with the police.
