PETALING JAYA: The son of veteran comedian and actor AR Badul died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu this morning.

Major Mohd Zahir Armaya, the commander of the 11th Special Forces Regiments, died during a demonstration exercise in conjunction with the launch of the 5th Infantry Division.

Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu conveyed his condolences to Zahir’s family and urged members of the public not to speculate on his death until the post-mortem report is complete.

“I hope the family will remain steadfast in facing this painful time,” he said in a statement.

Zahir, 36, was the third of seven children of AR Badul, whose real name is Armya Aman Ramlie.

Malay daily Utusan Online earlier reported that Zahir was shot during a demonstration at the Lok Kawi camp in Sabah.

Armed forces chief Ahmad Hasbullah Mohd Nawawi said Zahir’s death was a loss to the army personnel who loved him “very much”.

“However, Allah loves him more,” he said in a statement.

He also said the armed forces would investigate the cause of Zahir’s death.

According to the statement, the demonstration exercise in which he was involved began on Aug 26.

Zahir leaves behind five children aged nine to five months old.
