KUALA LUMPUR: Air Selangor will officially become the sole water supplier for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya starting Friday, and will be responsible for all water treatment and supply for the three areas, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari announced today.

“Air Selangor has completed the takeover of all private concessionaires, namely Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB Water), Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), Konsortium ABASS Sdn Bhd (ABASS), Konsortium Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (KASB) and Syarikat Pengeluar Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash).

“This successful restructuring means all water concessions have come to an end,” Amirudin told a press conference today.

Asked on the possibility of water tariffs going up, Amirudin said Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar would look into the matter.

He then said that Air Selangor had spent RM1.1 billion between 2016 and 2018 to upgrade and maintain the various water assets.

“What I want to say is that everything has a price and we too need to show what we have done.”

Last weekend, Jayakumar said Putrajaya might announce new water tariffs by year-end but assured that the new rates would not burden the people.
