PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak says Pakatan Harapan played the “most important” role in promoting the “Buy Muslim-made First” (BMF) campaign.
In a Facebook post on Monday night, Najib said the BMF Facebook group, which was set up last December, only had some 10,000 members until Aug 30 when Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad commented on the campaign.
“With that, it became a national issue and the group’s members swelled to 100,000 on the same night,” he said.
The next day, Najib said, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang spoke on the campaign and the group saw an increase of 500,000 members.
This was followed by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who slammed PAS and Umno “for no reason” for the campaign on Sept 1, he said.
Najib said Guan Eng had even challenged the masses not to buy handphones and as a result, the group’s numbers shot up to 1 million two days later.
“I’ve been told that the number of members in the group surpassed 1.6 million people today. So it is proven that PH and DAP played the most important role in promoting the BMF campaign.
“Yet they blame Umno, PAS, MCA and MIC,” he said.
The campaign began on social media with the Bumiputera community urged to avoid buying products made by businesses owned by non-Bumiputeras.
PAS and Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin defended the campaign in support of products made by Muslims, saying the campaign was aimed at strengthening the economic power of Muslims and giving them a competitive edge.
