220 schools, colleges in Tangkak and Muar closed tomorrow

TANGKAK: Some 220 schools and colleges in Tangkak and Muar will be closed tomorrow as air quality breached the “very unhealthy” mark today.

The Air Pollutant Index figure for Tangkak was at 203 (“very unhealthy”) at 7am and stood at 208 at 5pm, over a 35-kilometre radius, spanning both the Tangkak and Muar districts.

Johor state executive councillor Aminolhuda Hassan said the closure will affect 129 schools in Tangkak and 89 schools in Muar, as well as matriculation and other colleges.

A total of 40,000 school children will be affected, he said. School heads, teachers and other staff will report for duty as usual. He urged parents to ensure that their children do not spend their time outdoors.

Aminolhuda said this to reporters after the distribution of 50,000 face masks to schools in Tangkak and Muar.

An operations centre manned by the state’s Health Department was opened in Tangkak at 3pm today to monitor the haze situation in the district said executive councillor Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar. He said the state government was monitoring the air quality in various districts at risk.

Residents in haze-affected areas could get protective masks free of charge at the health clinics.
