Teacher drowns in Gopeng water rafting incident

KAMPAR: A teacher drowned in a water rafting incident at Sungai Jahang, Gopeng here yesterday evening.

Ahmad Khairudin Ayob, 47, of SK Limbongan, Melaka, was confirmed dead at the location by a medical team from the Gopeng health clinic at about 7pm.

Kampar district police chief Hasron Nazri Hashim said Khairudin had arrived here at about 3pm as part of a car-and-motorcycle convoy of 19 people.

He said 15 of them joined in a water rafting session in three boats conducted by a recreational company at Kampung Jahang.

“The victim was on the second boat with six others. They left at 5pm but 10 minutes later, the boat overturned about 500m from the departure point at Kuala Razila.

“He was swept away for about 1km before he was rescued by the crew of the first boat. One of them carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but there was no response. The others were saved,” Hasron said in a statement.

He said the current was strong following heavy rain.

He said the participants had been briefed and were provided with life jackets and helmets.

Khairudin’s remains were sent to the Kampar Hospital for a post-mortem.
