BUKIT MERTAJAM: A factory forklift driver was seriously injured after being shot by an unidentified man in a drive-by shooting in Taman Inderawasih, Perai, early today.
Central Seberang Perai district police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the victim, aged 26, and four of his male friends were chatting outside an apartment when a Proton Waja car sped by them.
“The same car, driven by a man, whizzed by them again, causing the group to become suspicious. One of them decided to pursue the speeding car on his motorcycle.”
The victim then decided to help his friend and also gave chase on his own motorcycle, but they were unable to keep up with the car, Nik Ros Azhan told reporters here today.
Both men were still in pursuit when a Perodua Myvi intercepted them. A man in the front passenger seat fired two shots in the victim’s direction, hitting him in the arm and abdomen.
“The victim and his friends could not see the gunman’s face as the car had tinted glass and the incident happened too quickly,” he added.
Nik Ros said the victim is in stable condition at Seberang Jaya Hospital. He said the victim reported that he had no problems with anyone.
An initial investigation revealed that the Proton Waja and Perodua Myvi cars both carried false registration numbers. Recordings of a closed-circuit camera in the area are being checked to identify those involved.
He said police had yet to find the bullet casings.
