Spa caretaker held over fake robbery

Police say the alleged ‘robbery’ was caught on surveillance camera.

GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained the caretaker of a spa and salon for faking a robbery after she alleged that she lost RM17,300 to man on a motorcycle in Seberang Jaya yesterday.

The 22-year-old woman was asked by her employer to withdraw the money from a bank to pay salaries and claimed that she was robbed in a back lane, Central Seberang Perai police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said

“The robbery was planned with her boyfriend, who is still at large. She told officers that her boyfriend had absconded with the cash,” he told FMT.

Nik Ros Azhan said the incident was caught on a surveillance camera.

He said the woman, who confessed to having lodged a false police report, was arrested with a 19-year old man, who was released as he was not involved in the fake robbery.

The woman has been remanded for four days to assist in the police investigation under Section 182 of the Penal Code for lodging a false report.
