1.4 mil Malaysians aged 12 and above without MyKad
Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the reasons include living in the interior, forgetting to apply for it, or having ignorant parents.
PUTRAJAYA: About 1.4 million Malaysians aged 12 and above and having birth certificates do not have the MyKad, said Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Based on statistics from the National Registration Department (JPN), he said, 45,588 of those without the MyKad are aged 13 to 17; 970,377 aged 18-80; 110,537 aged 81-90; and 302,694 aged 91 and above.
“They do not have the MyKad even though they are over 12 and are supposed to have one.
“I urge anyone who does not have an identity card to get it as soon as possible because it is an important document,” he said after officiating the JPN Day celebration at the department’s headquarters here today.
Muhyiddin said among the reasons why these Malaysians did not have the MyKad were that they were living in the interior, they had forgotten to apply for it, or that they had ignorant parents.
He said there were currently 22 million MyKad holders.
JPN director-general Ruslin Jusoh said at the event the department would introduce online applications for several services next year.
They include applications for birth certificates, retrieval of birth certificates, MyKad applications, retrieval of MyKad, and marriage registrations for non-Muslims.
Applicants need only be present to submit proof of the original documents before collecting the documents they had applied for, he said.
Ruslin said that starting this year, JPN had implemented a system for the automatic registration of deaths through an online programme with the police whereby every death reported at police stations in Peninsular Malaysia would be automatically recorded in the JPN system.
“MyKad replacement applications can now also be done online. Applicants only need to go to the JPN office to collect the MyKad,” he said.
Earlier, Muhyiddin said the Election Commission (EC) and JPN have set up a special task force to ensure the automatic implementation of voter registration scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2021, went smoothly.
He urged the two agencies to hold campaigns, especially with regard to updating or changing addresses.

“This will enable those who are 18 years old and eligible to vote to be automatically enrolled in the voting district based on the latest addresses in the JPN database,” he said.
