Don’t use varsities to spread political ideology, says TMJ
Tunku Ismail says universities should work to benefit everyone, not individual and political interests.
BATU PAHAT: The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, has urged universities to concentrate on their role as a place to gain and impart knowledge for everyone’s benefit and not a place to spread political ideologies for individual and political interests.
He noted that the university is a serious knowledge centre that brings significant contributions to the country and its peoples.
“This responsibility needs to be borne professionally for the mutual benefit of everyone and should not be individualistic or political in nature,” said Tunku Ismail, who is commonly referred to as TMJ (Tunku Mahkota Johor).
Speaking at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn’s convocation ceremony here, he said: “Every university and graduate should focus on developing human capital and delivering effective professional services, as well as high-quality education to benefit the community, especially in Johor.”
Tunku Ismail is the university’s pro-chancellor.
At the convocation, a total of 118 graduates received doctorate (PhD) degrees, 395 master’s degrees, 3,220 bachelor’s degrees and 966 diplomas.
An honorary doctorate in royal institution management was awarded to the president of the Johor Council of the Royal Court, Abdul Rahim Ramli.
