AG gets leave for contempt proceedings against Umno’s Lokman Adam
The Umno man had lodged a police report urging MACC to prosecute a witness in Najib Razak’s 1MDB trial for receiving money from Low Taek Jho.
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has allowed Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to initiate committal proceedings against Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam for allegedly threatening a witness in the 1MDB case, Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin.
Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah allowed the application for leave to commence the contempt proceedings, filed by the AG against Lokman.
“The applicant is to file the notice of motion regarding the contempt proceedings within 14 days from today,” said Sequerah.
Senior deputy public prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram said Lokman attempted to interfere with the administration of justice.
“We submitted that the threshold for leave to initiate contempt has been met due to a clear attempt by Lokman to interfere in the due administration of justice, ” Sri Ram said.
Sri Ram submitted that the respondent not only lodged a police report against Amhari Efendi but also gave a video interview where he allegedly attacked the integrity of the AG.
Lokman in a police report against Amhari had urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate and prosecute the witness for receiving money from fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho.
He also uploaded a video repeating the allegation made in the report.
Lokman was given seven days to respond to a show cause letter issued by deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustafa Kunyalam.
Najib is facing 25 charges of money laundering and abuse of power over alleged 1MDB funds.
