PONTIAN: Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Tanjung Piai candidate Karmaine Sardini says the coalition is banking on the presence of its chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad during campaigning for the by-election there.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of early voting here today, Karmaine said the prime minister’s presence would draw the focus of voters and that people would appreciate his “aura”.

Mahathir is scheduled to arrive tomorrow to help PH’s campaign and speak at a ceramah at the Kukup Laut bus terminal.

Karmaine, from PPBM, said he hoped early voters would vote for PH as the coalition formed the federal and state government in Johor.

“It’s appropriate that the early voters give their support to PH. I came to wish them well and see the situation,” he said at the early voting centre for police officers at the Pontian district police headquarters.

Some 280 police officers are involved in early voting today.

The Tanjung Piai by-election will see a six-cornered fight between Karmaine, Barisan Nasional’s Wee Jeck Seng, Wendy Subramaniam (Gerakan), Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz (Berjasa) and independents Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar and Ang Chuan Lock.

The Tanjung Piai seat fell vacant after Md Farid Md Rafik, a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, died on Sept 21 from heart complications.

Tanjung Piai is a mixed seat with 53,528 registered voters, comprising 57% Malays, 41.66% Chinese and 1% Indians.
