PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim has described the Barisan Nasional’s landslide victory at the Tanjung Piai by-election tonight as a shock and clear message to the Pakatan Harapan leadership.

BN’s Wee Jeck Seng defeated the ruling coalition’s candidate, Karmaine Sardini of PPBM, by a 15,086-vote majority.

“We need to learn lessons from this result,” the PKR president said in a brief statement.

Anwar also said that PH must make the effort to install confidence in its policies among the people by working towards fulfilling its promises.

He went on to congratulate Wee over the win.

Johor leaders of PH said they accepted the loss and saw it as a signal by voters which must be viewed seriously by the coalition.

“Pakatan Harapan needs to go back to the drawing board and review its policies, approach and the performance of the coalition and that of the government, which had contributed to the loss,” it said in a statement.

The statement was signed by PH Johor chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and the heads of Johor PKR, Amanah, DAP and PPBM – Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Aminolhuda Hassan, Liew Chin Tong and Mazlan Bujang respectively.

The defeated PH candidate, Karmaine Sardini, said he accepted the loss. “The people of Tanjung Piai have made their choice and we have to accept it.”

News of the BN victory was greeted with a round of applause at an event in Kuala Lumpur attended by the MP for Kepong, Lim Lip Eng of DAP. He said in a posting on Twitter: “When I said that Pakatan Harapan lost badly, the crowd applauded.”
