PAS congratulates Wee and BN, Syed Saddiq says sorry

A victory wave from Wee Jeck Seng (BN-MCA), the newly-elected MP for Tanjung Piai, in Pontian tonight.

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s electoral ally PAS tonight congratulated Barisan Nasional and its candidate Wee Jeck Seng following the coalition’s landslide win in the Tanjung Piai by-election, which saw them wrest back the parliamentary seat from Pakatan Harapan.

The Islamic party said the win would strengthen the opposition block, not just in terms of the number of seats it held in the Dewan Rakyat but also providing a more effective check and balance against the government.

“We also feel the current formula of the alliance with Umno and BN, and that of PAS and Gagasan Sejahtera, as being suitable for the 15th general election,” PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said in a statement.

Earlier tonight, BN trounced Pakatan Harapan with a convincing 15,086 vote majority.

MCA’s Wee garnered 25,466 votes, while his closest rival, PH candidate, Karmaine Sardini of PPBM managed only 10,380 votes.

PPBM Youth chief, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the loss was a bitter pill to swallow.

Syed Saddiq, who is MP for Muar, said the people had spoken and their anger must be addressed.

“My sincerest apologies to Malaysian youth for my shortcomings,” he said in a statement.
