As PKR spat threatens to widen, Zuraida says Anwar has power to do what he likes

PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin says there is ‘no confusion’ as to who should open the youth congress.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin today said Anwar Ibrahim is party president and has the power to do what he likes.

This comes as the spat between the party’s deputy president, Mohamed Azmin Ali, and its youth wing over the PKR National Youth Congress threatens to worsen.

It also follows Anwar’s blessing for the congress to be officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as decided by the political bureau and the central leadership council.

Earlier this week, PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir said Wan Azizah would officiate the youth congress instead of Azmin, amid talk that the invitation to Azmin had been withdrawn by party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.

This led to a war of words between Azmin and the youth wing as traditionally, the party’s deputy president is invited to open the national conventions of the party’s youth and women’s wings.

Today, Zuraida, who is one of Azmin’s staunchest supporters, referred to the tradition when stating that there was no confusion as to who should officiate the congress.

“But if the president has given his blessing, then we shall leave it as that. He is the president and he has the power to do as he likes,” the housing and local government minister told FMT when met at a function in Ampang here.

Zuraida’s comments come a day after Anwar renewed criticism of Azmin over the youth congress.

Azmin had previously alleged that there were “hidden hands” in Akmal’s move to cancel the invitation to him to officiate the event.

“Nobody should be arrogant in making decisions. This decision can only be made by the political bureau and the central leadership council, not by the secretary-general,” Anwar told reporters in Terengganu.
