PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the Tanjung Piai by-election was expected, but expressed surprise at the margin with which it had won.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said a post-mortem would be conducted on the coalition’s performance.

“I expected the majority to be not more than 2,000 votes. But the official results show a 15,086 majority.

“A thorough, serious and honest post-mortem will be conducted at all levels to find out the real reason behind the by-election defeat,” he said in a statement today.

BN saw its biggest win yet in the by-election for the Johor federal seat on Nov 16, with MCA’s Wee Jeck Seng getting 25,466 votes – more than half that of his closest rival from PH, PPBM’s Karmaine Sardini, who got 10,380 votes.

Mahathir said he accepted the decision of the people of Tanjung Piai.

“I thank everyone who worked hard throughout the by-election,” he added.
