Shafie hints at Warisan candidate for Kimanis polls

KOTA KINABALU: Warisan president Shafie Apdal says a meeting will be held with the party’s coalition partners before any decision is made on the candidate for the Kimanis by-election, hinting however that a Warisan candidate will be vying for the seat.

The Sabah chief minister, who is presently leading a trade mission in Tokyo, said this was because a Warisan candidate had contested the seat in the 14th general election (GE14) last year.

“When we placed a candidate there, something unintended happened, but Alhamdulillah (praise God) the court made the correct decision.

“But we need to appeal to the voters, especially those in Kimanis,” he said in a statement today.

The Kimanis seat was vacated after the Federal Court upheld the Aug 16 decision of the election court to declare the victory of former foreign minister Anifah Aman in GE14 null and void.

The election court had agreed with the petitioner, Warisan’s Karim Bujang, that there was misconduct on the part of the Election Commission in handling Forms 13 and 14 which affected some 341 ballots.

The court, however, cleared Anifah of corruption or bribery allegations.

Shafie said he was confident of getting the support of the people, adding however that the party could not afford to become complacent.

“I recently visited Kimanis. We have started some initiatives including setting up a furniture factory in the area. God willing, we will realise those initiatives.

“What’s important is that we make the necessary preparations particularly Warisan and other component parties such as PPBM, PKR, DAP and Upko,” he said.
