PH MP wants Tajuddin referred to privileges committee over ashes remarks

PETALING JAYA: Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, who was suspended from the Dewan Rakyat for two days after protesting remarks by a Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmaker linking Hindu holy ashes to those of communist leader Chin Peng, says he will push for the MP in question to be referred to Parliament’s Rights and Privileges Committee.

In a statement, he said stern action must be taken to protect the integrity and sanctity of the lower house.

“Today, I will write to the government to urge a minister to file a motion to refer Tajuddin (Abdul Rahman) to the Rights and Privileges Committee for further action.”

Both Khoo and Tajuddin were suspended following the ruckus that ensued after the latter repeatedly asked Jelutong MP RSN Rayer whether the holy ashes worn on his forehead were the ashes of Chin Peng.

Tajuddin later retracted his remarks but insisted that he had merely been asking a question.

He also suggested that Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof suspend him for four days instead of two.

Khoo meanwhile was suspended for ignoring Ariff’s instructions not to continue raising the matter.

He said he harboured no ill feelings against Ariff but maintained that this was not how Dewan Rakyat proceedings should be held.

“How can we allow an elected MP to utter a derogatory and insulting remark against the Hindu community in the Dewan Rakyat without any action taken?”

He also challenged BN component parties MIC and MCA to say whether they agreed with Tajuddin’s comments.
