KUALA LUMPUR: A representative of Mahasiswa Umno has blamed Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman for the public’s distrust in young leaders, saying voters made the minister the target of their jokes.
Muhammad Mirza Adnan, a student at Universiti Malaya, said Syed Saddiq has become the best example of a youth who was not prepared for a leadership role.
“Worse still, there is now a trust deficit in youth leaders,” he told delegates at the Umno general assembly at Putra World Trade Centre here today.
Mirza said this is why youths in Umno need to prepare and equip themselves to be leaders in order to gain the attention of the party’s top leadership.
With the party now forming the opposition bloc, he said it is up to the youths to step up to the plate as they will decide the future of the party.
Mirza also said he is worried that the country is being governed by the “law of the jungle”.
He cited a few cases, including the fiasco over the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd), the individuals charged with links to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE), and what he termed as “recognition of communists”.
