No problem, Azmin says on suggestion to cut ministers’ perks

Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali says it is important to handle the country's finances prudently.

Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali says it is only right for the Cabinet to revisit decision on abolishing critical service allowance.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali said he would not oppose any move by Putrajaya if it agrees with Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman‘s suggestion for a cut in ministerial allowances.

“If there is a need to cut, then cut. There is no problem.

“What is more important is we need to manage finances with responsibility and accountability. We must ensure there are no corrupt practices and abuse of power,” he said after visiting the site of a broken retaining wall at a Bukit Antarabangsa housing area today.

Azmin said the bad experiences suffered over the last few years had a negative effect on the country’s economy and the rakyat.

He said the Pakatan Harapan government will focus efforts on stopping corruption and abuse of power and will focus on prudent spending.

Azmin was commenting on a suggestion by Syed Saddiq for Putrajaya to reduce allowances to politicians and Cabinet ministers.

This followed the controversy over the abolition of the critical service incentive (BIPK) for doctors, pharmacists, dentists, nurses and engineers entering the civil service next year.

However, following public outcry, the Public Service Department (JPA) has been told to put off its implementation until the Cabinet decides on the matter.

Azmin agreed that the matter should be discussed in-depth at the Cabinet meetings, taking into account the reaction from the public.

“The Cabinet is always considering the views of the rakyat. We take four to five hours every Wednesday to discuss problems like this,” he said.
