PETALING JAYA: Washington’s Overseas Security Advisory Council (Osac) has issued a security alert for Kuala Lumpur, citing increased “security tensions in the Middle East”.
“US citizens are advised to maintain a high level of vigilance, review their personal security plans, vary routes, and remain alert to their surroundings,” it said.
It also warned citizens from participating in demonstrations while in the country, urging them to avoid such gatherings if possible as it was illegal for foreigners to join them.
Osac also advised US citizens to keep a low profile and ensure their travel documents are updated and easily accessible.
This comes after US airstrikes near Baghdad International Airport killed Iran’s top security and intelligence commander Qasem Soleimani, fuelling fears that Iran will retaliate and tensions will spiral into a larger conflict.
Putrajaya had said it was deeply concerned over the latest situation following the US drone strikes, adding that it believed all efforts should be undertaken to resolve disputes or conflicts through peaceful means, without resorting to threat or use of force.
