Motorist killed, 5 hurt as car goes against traffic

SEREMBAN: A motorist was killed and five others, including three motorcyclists and a pillion rider, were injured when they were hit by a car driven by a man believed to be drunk at Km17.5 of the Lekas Highway here this morning.

The motorist, identified as Abdul Salam Saad, 34, died at the scene from severe head injuries in the 3.20am incident, Nilai police chief Mohd Nor Marzukee Besar said.

He said preliminary investigations showed that Salam’s vehicle and three motorcycles were travelling in the same direction from the Pajam toll exit towards Seremban when the car, driving against traffic to enter the toll exit, crashed into them.

The 30-year-old driver sustained head and body injuries, he said.

The three motorcyclists and one pillion rider also suffered hand and body injuries.

Marzukee said Salam’s body was sent to Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital here for a post-mortem. The injured driver was also taken to the same hospital for treatment.

He said police were waiting for the driver’s urine tests results.

Car rams into police vehicle on Federal Highway

In a separate incident, a police patrol car was hit by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver on the Federal Highway (Kuala Lumpur-bound) early today.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Mohd Zani Che Din said a car had stalled in the middle of the highway at about 4am.

“A police corporal who was on duty at the scene parked his patrol car behind the stalled vehicle. He left the emergency lights flashing as he stepped out to help direct traffic.

“However, a car suddenly approached from behind and crashed into the police car,” he said in a statement.

No one was hurt.

Zani said the motorist, who was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, was taken to the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters.
