KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal has expressed Warisan’s support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad to remain as prime minister.

He said although he had to be mindful of the possible changes in Putrajaya, the Warisan-led Sabah government’s primary focus was on Sabah and its people.

He said he had already stated previously that Mahathir should be allowed to complete his term as prime minister.

However, he stressed that regardless of what happened in Putrajaya, Sabah would always maintain a strong rapport with the federal government.

Shafie stressed that the political developments at the federal level would not have any bearing on the state.

He said Warisan and its allies would still be running the state regardless of any changes in Putrajaya.

“We are not part of Pakatan Harapan (PH)… our stand had been consistent and that is Sabah needs to work closely with the federal government, whoever that may be.

“We are running the state well. We have the numbers. We can still run the state. Nothing will happen, only perhaps our relationship with the federal government,” he said after launching a district officers’ conference at a five-star hotel here today.

Shafie said this amid speculation that a new coalition would be formed involving MPs from PPBM, PAS, Umno and those aligned with former PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.

The ruling parties in Sabah comprise Warisan, Upko, Sabah PKR and Sabah DAP.
