PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader who left the party has claimed that those accused of causing the downfall of Pakatan Harapan are actually trying to save the country and supporting interim Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said the Sheraton Hotel meet on Sunday, where BN MPs and 11 PKR MPs met, was not to form a new coalition called Pakatan Nasional but it was to sign a statutory declaration to show support for Mahathir to be the prime minister till the end of the term.
“At the Friday’s PH presidential meeting, these people who are suddenly now throwing their support for Mahathir were the ones demanding his resignation.
“These same people are now offering their support to Mahathir but they have actually come with hidden daggers,” the former PKR leader, who declined to be named, told FMT.
DAP said yesterday that it wanted Mahathir to be reinstated as the prime minister. It had also said that it did not want to support people who were working with tainted BN leaders.
Amanah’s Mohamad Sabu had also said he would support Mahathir as the prime minister.
This followed Mahathir’s resignation as the 7th prime minister yesterday.
The former PKR leader told FMT that the Sheraton meet on Sunday was to enable all those who supported Mahathir to sign the statutory declaration.
“What choice did we have because till Saturday there were serious efforts by others to stop Mahathir from continuing as prime minister,” he added.
He said because of this, the SD was prepared to state that the signatories would support Mahathir till the end of the current term.
“Now, all 221 MPs are suddenly supporting Mahathir as PM but we are the ones being called traitors,” he said, referring to comments in social media which labelled them as traitors.
He said even the BN leaders who were at Sheraton were there to show support for Mahathir and not to discuss a new Cabinet line-up.
“There were no talks about forming a new government. We just needed the numbers to support Mahathir to stop the other group from overthrowing him,” the former PKR leader added.
“Our mistake was we didn’t inform the public what the meeting was all about.
“We should have shown the SD there and then to the press. To show the truth.”
He said Umno MPs might show their support but it was now up to Mahathir to choose any MP he wanted for the government. “He knows the truth.”
“All MPs can join the government. However, only the prime minister may give them a role,” he said.
He said PKR sacked Mohamed Azmin Ali and Zuraida Kamaruddin for supporting Mahathir for the full term.
“But, now PKR and DAP also claim to support Mahathir as PM for the full term. Why are they doing it now?” he asked.
The MPs who have quit with Azmin and Zuraida on Monday are Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Baru Bian (Selangau), Kamaruddin Jaffar (Bandar Tun Razak), Mansor Othman (Nibong Tebal), Rashid Hasnon (Batu Pahat), Edmund Santhara Kumar (Segamat), Ali Biju (Saratok), Willie Mongin (Puncak Borneo) and Jonathan Yasin (Ranau).
