PETALING JAYA: Veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang says the best way to form a unity government is to have Pakatan Harapan as the anchor.
Interim Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday proposed a non-partisan unity government to fill the vacuum caused by the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government on Monday.
Lim said any attempt to form a unity government by destroying PH was “foolish and short-sighted”.
He said the way forward for the country was to form a government around PH and convince other political parties and entities to work together in fulfilling the mandate of a New Malaysia.
“Although the idea of a national unity government is attractive and should be considered by all rational Malaysians, one thing is clear, no national unity government can be established on treachery, deceit, corruption, betrayal of the people’s mandate or by promoting national disunity,” said Lim in a statement.
The four-member PH coalition which came to power in May 2018 after the 14th general election lost its majority support in Parliament following political manoeuvrings among MPs from PPBM, Umno, PAS and others intent on forming a new coalition government.
“Nobody rejects the idea of a national unity government. The first task is to restore the Pakatan Harapan government.”
Yesterday, Mahathir pleaded with the public to give him a chance to gather MPs from all sides and form a non-partisan government.
“Right or wrong, I feel that politics and partisan politics need to be put aside for now. If allowed, I would try to establish a government that does not side with any party. Only the interest of the nation will be given priority.
“If permitted, this is what I will attempt,” he said reading out from an 18-point prepared statement.
