Najib’s lawyer Shafee tests negative for Covid-19

The Najib Razak trial was postponed when lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said he was in self-quarantine over Covid-19.

PETALING JAYA: Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, lead counsel for Najib Razak, has tested negative for Covid-19.

It is learnt that he took the Covid-19 test on March 12. “Yes. Negative,” a source close to the defence team told FMT when asked about the test result.

News of the test result comes two days after Najib’s trial in the 1MDB case was postponed because of Shafee’s absence. His office said he had been in contact with a suspected Covid-19 patient.

The High Court has tentatively set March 19 for Najib’s trial to resume. Six others in Najib’s defence team were also to be tested for Covid-19.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib had told the court that the prosecution team members will get themselves tested, while ad hoc prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram had also been tested for Covid-19.

Shafee was tested after contact with a relative suspected to have been in close contact with a Covid-19 positive person.

The court was told that Shafee and team members attended a kenduri last weekend with Shafee’s sister-in-law, who was in close contact with her work colleague who had tested positive for Covid-19.

Najib is on trial accused of 25 charges of money laundering and abuse of power over RM2.28 billion in funds allegedly from 1MDB which were deposited in his accounts with AmBank between February 2011 and December 2014.
